The Cabin, Mt Hawthorn

Earlier this year I shifted from Mount Lawley to Mount Hawthorn, both buzzing Perth hubs that have endless potential.

When you live in Mt. Lawley you tend to stick to Mt. Lawley, venturing out of it’s stronghold just doesn’t seem worth it. But one bar that’s leading the charge in the attempt to create the same dynamic atmosphere in Mt. Hawthorn is The Cabin.

Southern fried pork cheeks, smoked paprika aioli $16

The Cabin is warm, inviting and eleganty styled. With wooden tables, dim lights and faux fireplaces, it really strives to welcome you into it’s loving arms. 

We went on a Friday night and we started with $10 happy hour cocktails that run from 4-9pm every Friday. I had the  ‘Surprise Me’ – Vodka, Cointreau, Grape Juice, Lime and Scrooga had the ‘Frangelico Mule’ – Frangelico, fresh lime & ginger beer. We then started with the Daily breads with EVOO & balsamic vinegar ($6) which were simple and fresh. One thing that cannot be faulted about The Cabin is the service. Always attentive, chatty and respectful, the staff were all you could ask for in a dining experience.

The Cabin offers both large meals and tapas style dining, we decided to try a few different dishes tapas style as we weren’t looking for anything too heavy. The Southern fried pork cheek with smoked paprika aioli ($16) was the stand out of the night. The pork was succulent and cooked to perfection accompanied by a tasty aioli. We then tried the New York potatoes, vinaigrette, bacon, sour cream & chives ($8) and it was a nice twist on standard potato salad and a good filler dish.

Baked in the box camembert, honey, hazelnut, bread sticks ($30)

A daring choice that’s not for everyone is the Baked in the box camembert with honey, hazelnut and bread sticks ($30). Personally, I think this is more suited to Sunday afternoons basking in the sun with a glass of wine instead of Friday night dinner and it was MORE than enough for 2 people (they recommend 4). The gooey camembert is a nice accompaniment to the honey and macadamia but we found it to be a little sweet when paired with the other savoury dishes. Well presented but not for all occasions.

Keep in mind when making dinner reservations that they have set booking times of 6pm and 8pm.

Overall, The Cabin is doing Mt. Hawthorn the world of good. Offering a laid back and elegant dining experience paired with great staff and location. A must for anyone looking for their next favourite haunt.
